Khajjiar comes up in almost every conversation about visiting Dalhousie, and for a fairly simple reason: it's close, it's scenic, and it's an easy half-day trip.
How far is it, really?
Khajjiar is roughly 20–24 km from Dalhousie, depending on which part of town you're starting from. By road, that's usually 45 minutes to an hour, longer if the weather's turned or the road's busy.
What's actually there
A wide green meadow ringed by cedar forest, a small lake at its centre, and the Khajji Nag Temple. Most of what people do here is straightforward: walk the meadow, take a short pony ride if that interests you, or just sit somewhere quiet for a while. It's less a destination with a checklist and more a place to slow down for an hour or two.
Timing your visit
Late morning to early afternoon tends to be the busiest window, especially on weekends. If you'd rather have the meadow to yourself, an earlier start from Dalhousie helps.
Combining it with other stops
Some visitors combine Khajjiar with Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, which sits along the same route, or continue further to Chamba town if they have a full day rather than half.
