Dalhousie sits spread across five hills in the Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, at an elevation that keeps it noticeably cooler than the plains for most of the year. If it's your first visit, here's what's worth knowing before you arrive.
Getting there
The nearest airport is Gaggal (Kangra), and the nearest railway station is Pathankot — both are a few hours away by road. Most visitors arrive by car or taxi from Pathankot, Chandigarh, or Amritsar.
Getting around once you're there
Dalhousie's main areas — Gandhi Chowk and Subhash Chowk — are walkable, but the town is spread across hillsides, so a lot of getting around means either walking uphill or taking a short taxi ride. Banikhet, a little outside the main town, is quieter and a common base for longer stays.
When to visit
Summers (April–June) are mild and popular with visitors escaping the heat elsewhere. Winters bring snow and a different, quieter kind of appeal. Monsoon months can bring heavy rain and occasional landslides on the approach roads, so it's worth checking conditions if you're travelling June through August.
What most visitors do
Mall Road for a walk and the local shops, Panchpula and Satdhara for short nature walks, and a day trip to Khajjiar — often called the "Mini Switzerland of India" for its meadow — are the most common stops. St. John's Church and St. Francis Church are worth a look if you're interested in the town's colonial-era buildings.
